The Rise of Downtown Mesa’s Innovation District – A New Urban Model

Leveraging Downtown’s key assets to recreate the heart of the City.

Innovation Districts, as defined by Washington DC think tank the Brookings Institution, “are geographic areas where leading-edge anchor institutions and companies cluster and connect with start-ups, business incubators, and accelerators. They are also physically compact, transit-accessible, and technically-wired, and offer mixed-use housing, office, and retail.”

Innovation districts bring together a diverse population looking for better places to live, work, and play, driving an eclectic mix of housing, jobs, and amenities in a walkable community.

A recent Brookings’ study found that Downtown Mesa is well positioned with many of the key attributes in place or in various stages of development that are key in building a robust innovation district.

Arts, Culture, Entertainment

Downtown is an appealing arts district that patrons of all ages can enjoy – day or night. The Mesa Arts Center (MAC) is a unique, architecturally stunning, international award-winning facility located in the heart of Downtown Mesa, and is Arizona’s largest arts center, with four theaters, five art galleries, and 14 art studios. More than 450,000 people visit the MAC every year. Downtown Mesa is home to many additional museums, galleries, restaurants, music venues, entertainment attractions, and Arizona’s premier emerging artist festival, the Mesa Music Festival, which attracts musicians and industry experts from around the world.

A Destination for Higher Education

Downtown Mesa is an epicenter for public and private college experiences, and home to Mesa Community College’s Downtown Campus, Benedictine University, and the forthcoming ASU @ Mesa City Center.

In 2013, Benedictine University invested in Downtown by opening a new campus on Main Street. Today, the university hosts more than 500 students and has expanded to classroom and lab space at Mesa’s Center for Higher Education.

Recently, Mesa’s City Council approved a plan to fund the design and construction of a 115,000-square-foot building for Arizona State University (ASU) in Downtown Mesa. The campus, dubbed ASU @ Mesa City Center, will bring no less than 40 faculty and 750 students to the campus within five years. Additional phases could bring further buildings and many more students.

ASU, selected as the nation’s most innovative school by U.S. News and World Report, will bring new programs focused on technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation. In those programs, students will explore virtual reality, advanced data visualization, 3D animation, and more. ASU @ Mesa City Center will serve as an important anchor for Downtown Mesa’s innovation district and will help further drive private investment.

Developing, Incubating, Accelerating Innovation

Mesa is a community where ideas are formed, incubated, and scaled. Much start-up and acceleration activity is already happening in Downtown Mesa.

LaunchPoint, the Mesa Technology Accelerator, is a place for technology entrepreneurs to grow their businesses. In fact, a LaunchPoint participating entrepreneur, Adam Small of Urbix Resources, was recently named to Forbes list of “30 under 30” for Energy, and GT Medical Technologies was recently named as an Arizona Innovation Challenge winner and will receive up to $250,000 to grow and commercialize its technology. www.launchpointmesa.com

HeatSync Labs, located in Downtown, is a community-driven, non-profit shop and workspace where engineers, artists, students, and hobbyists come to make prototypes, art, and other creative projects. It is a workshop for budding scientists and engineers, artists, and anyone creating or making. HeatSnyc provides equipment, tools, resources, and assistance to participants. www.heatsynclabs.org

Mesa THINKspot is a collaborative workspace and makerspace within the Mesa Public Library. It is a place where entrepreneurs can collaborate, share ideas and best practices, and develop new ideas using the center’s digital tools, recording studio, meeting spaces, 3D printers, and other technology-focused assets. www.mesathinkspot.org

Adjacent to the forthcoming ASU @ Mesa City Center will be The Studios @ Mesa City Center, an adaptive reuse of Mesa’s iconic first library building. The Studios will allow for networking, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas among industry leaders, entrepreneurs, students, and the public.
